The Site-Specific Projects of Teatro Potlach: The City as Set Design and Dramaturgy

Teatro Potlach is an Italian theatre company founded in 1976 by Pino Di Buduo and Daniela Regnoli in a little village, Fara In Sabina, after a period of training by the two young people at Odin Teatret, under the supervision of Eugenio Barba. The principles of the company are those of the theatre anthropology followed by Odin, the work exclusively based on the body and the transformation of the space through the body. In 1991, to create a relationship with the citizens of the place where the company lives, the director begins to perform the first site-specific performance, Invisible Cities, inspired by Italo Calvino’s book, which explores the memory of a place and gives it back to its inhabitants, letting a never seen before city appear. Subsequently he creates other similar projects like Contemporary Landscapes, inspired by the intangible culture of the places; Angels over the City, about the theme of the artist and I Landscape – The Secrets of the Building, which creates its dramaturgy based on a historical value building. The projects are developed with an interdisciplinary and multimedia approach that involves, in addition to the performing arts, anthropology, history and above all architecture and the work on a space. Indeed, on the place chosen for the performance, the company builds a path of about 1 kilometer that is transformed by means of different elements. Unlike theatre shows where the space is generally not binding, for these projects the space is the primary founding core. All the stage elements and the performances are linked to the real city, which is not a neutral element but an active subject. The final set design is partly built and partly real, but the built one depends on the real one that determines it. The city is not only set design but also dramaturgy because it is staged and tells itself. For this reason we can speak about “dramaturgy of space”, referring to dramaturgy, not only to the written text but also all the elements that create the whole performance. The final goal is to put citizens in contact with the culture and memory of the place where they live, which are the dramaturgical roots of these projects so that they are not forgotten and they are transmitted to the new generations.
...

...

Based on the example of the production Numax-Fagor-Plus by the Catalan director Roger Bernat, the article discusses the paradoxical structure of a technical device while establishing relations with aspects of a “monolithic” behaviour of social media spectators with users who tweet and post, and while raising issues concerning autonomous and free action. The technical transmission of the text is important for the development of the theatre production Numax-Fagor-Plus in the fragile framework of the museum, in principle outside theatre. This article mediated by a “technical device” matches the idea of postspectacular theatre — to introduce distances to enable the emergence of the “third mediator” — and works as spontaneous participation in the sense of postdramatic theatre. The seemingly direct contact in the “dialogue” in which the spectators might be willing to engage, prepared for the self-empowerment of the talks among the audience before the start of the scenic realization, becomes ironic proof of its illusion, visualised as a mere monitoring of a technically suggested behaviour. The scenic realization makes clear how those attending work as a mass, how they relate with each other and how they act with the text “on demand”, while subjecting themselves, from the outset, without challenging it, to a rule that is nowhere explicitly mentioned. Based on an apparent freedom, they are almost cynically led towards a test of obedience, and now they paradoxically experience a much wider and notable freedom: what happens if I don’t subject myself to it?
...

"Moving objects" Who moves whom? Who moves what?
Article

Moving objects is a performative practice that I have been developing for four years in different contexts. Through a simple proposal (or action score), participants move objects that were already in a space. In silence, the landscape changes and the action of moving objects reverses its logic: who moves whom? The gesture ceases to be utilitarian and becomes the result of listening and deciding; it becomes the primary gesture of creation and, invoking Simone Weil’s concept, of decreation.

No mere body as an object, nor mere figuration of the object. Moving objects calls into question the relationships between objects and bodies, between figuration and abstraction, eroding these dichotomies, revealing relations of continuity, contagion, mimicry, absorption and chiasm between bodies and objects. In this intertwining and blurring of body and object positions, a performative critique of the categories of subject and object as well as the very structure of representation becomes apparent.

In this lecture I propose to reflect on certain events that have taken place in the unfolding of this practice (a practice that may find parallels with the spontaneous practices of social and political protest, as well as with playing, or certain rituals), which highlight transfigurative relationships between bodies and objects, potentials for transformation of the common space and its collective meaning and that allow critical ex-ploration of dialectics between what we look at and what looks at us, what we touch and what touches us, what we move and what moves us.
...

...
