Federico García Lorca: dramaturg o director?
Article

In his book Federico y su mundo, Francisco García Lorca contends that the stage in his brother's plays “ ... opens up not only towards the spectator but towards an afterlife surrounding the stage”. Relying on her clase study of La casa de Bernarda Alba, Isabel Cámara seeks to show that this hypothesis is accurate and easily proven. In this particular tragedy, Lorca exchanges the stage direction Enter/ Exit in such a way that “Exit” acquires a double meaning: the one that conventionally corresponds to it and also its opposite. Concerning Poncia, Bernarda and Adela “Exit” not only signifies to disappear from the public's sight, but it also announces the “Exit” from backstage to the public stage. The confusion of the stage directions is in direct relation to the tragic tension of the drama, so that the confusion raises two phenomena; the union of the two dramatic spaces, stage and backstage, and the intense presence of the playwright/”director” in the climactic moment of the tragedy. The true protagonist turns out to be the stage and the dramatic space off-stage ar “outside”. At the end of the tragedy, the true protagonist turns out to be the stage and the decor of the initial scene through two of the main characters. It should be recalled that when the curtain rises, the stage is empty and silent. After Adela commits suicide, an event which takes place backstage, Poncia commands to Bernarda, “Don't Enter!”, and the final word of the drama, uttered by Bernarda, is “Silence!”. This inevitably recalls the space and silence which initiate the play.

Cámara maintains that La casa de Bernarda Alba is unique among the plays of Lorca because the author has deliberately exchanged the signs of the stage directions, with the intention of offering the public a “mise en crise” of the conventional psychic and physical spaces on stage.
...

The following article focuses on the dramaturgical process developed in contemporary circus by analysing the piece Je tirerais pour toi by the company Collectif Merkén, performed by the Chilean artist Pamela Pantoja. A theoretical and reflexive analysis is carried out on how the dramaturgical connection is shaped through its contextual and/or territorial limits with the Chilean circus scene.

The central hypothesis of the article argues the transition from a fragmented dramaturgy to an authored dramaturgy based on stage practice, which has rectified the dramaturgical discourse of circus with extended practices of an identity nature to hybrid practices influenced by the postdramatic, underpinned by the principles of the search for dramaturgical limits.

We believe that this hybridisation is reshaping the identity directly linked to an area of ideological and social creation to later converge in aesthetic and dramaturgical reflections that embrace the current state of contemporary circus.

Moreover, Pamela Pantoja develops her show based on the narrative of the Chilean dictatorship and circus, specifically in aerial silk and hair hanging. The piece emerged out of the need to dialogue with her past and seeks to question the “pact of silence” that has hung over Chile since 11 September 1973. She does so through research and archives based on concepts and questionings of the family, the Chilean identity and the legacy of the coup in Chile: censorship and the apology for violence.
...

...

«La gaviota» de Àlex Rigola. Memorias de un proceso de escenificación

This paper describes and analyses part of the process of staging Àlex Rigola’s The Seagull (Barcelona, 1969). Written as a record, it explores the dramaturgical adaptation, the shaping of the proposed theatrical language, the issues raised, the methods used to stage what was devised (notably those implemented in the field of acting direction through a decàleg de joc) and the stages into which the rehearsal period was divided. Its main objective is to consider the development stage of a theatrical experience by recording specific data and through interpretive description — exegesis — of what has been done in a month and a week of rehearsals. Moreover, the paper seeks to decipher the poetic hybridisation procedures that a creator in the current European scene develops as a strategy to forge their work. In an effort to specifically and representatively distinguish the staging observed here, this has been called narrative naturalism.
...

Dues visions del fet cinematogràfic: Juan Gil-Albert i Francisco Ayala

In the year 1955 the writer Juan Gil-Albert published a brief text entitled Contra el cine in which, as a mature man and author, he approaches the subject of cinematography. Francisco Ayala had already written on the theme in a series of articles published in 1929. In Ayala's texts the confrontation of the young and the adult reveals divergent perspectives in relation to a common centre of interest.

Ayala and Gil-Albert share only the subject to be realt with and both of them, despite the fact that they were born in the same year (1906), differ as to the mood of the work published as well as in their points of view, approaches and conclusions. It is precisely in the approach to the same subject that the difference between the two writers is evident. While Ayala appears as a lover of cinema, an enthusiastic fan of the movie theatre show since his childhood, Gil-Albert rebels against the passive condition of the spectator.
...

The translation of a language into another one has always pursued the aim to incorporate, for whatever reason it may be, a work belonging to a certain language and culture into the translator's language and culture; the accuracy with which this task is done has changed a great deal in the course of the centuries: it has become more rigorous eventually, so that this excess of rigour has ended up by ruining the translator's normal purposes, that's to say, to get either .the readers or the audience to understand the work's deep, last content. Josep M. de Sagarra's sensibility has understood from the beginning the risk of reaching this extremity; his translations of Shakespeare are a real Catalanisation of this English playwright, without betraying at all his thought, but making it suitable for our country's scenery. That is what the analysed fragments show, specially the difficult version of Mistress Mine from the Magi's Night. A perfect fluency in Catalan, both in prose and verse, has been the tool which has enabled Sagarra to carry out his task with absolute guarantee of success, and so has been proved by the performance of any of his versions of Shakespeare.
...

Since 1975 there have been several bills that tried to get a legal framework where the dramatic activity could be inserted. Finally, 26th. March 1982, the Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya (communist) presented to the Parliament a Bill which, 13th. May, was rejected by 62 votes against (Convergencia i Unió, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya and Centristes de Catalunya-UCD) and 54 votes for (PSUC and socialists). Estudis Escenics publishes a dossier about this question made by Jordi Teixidor, well-known playwright who took part directly in the writing of the Bjll. Then we publish wholly the Bill's articulate and a summary of the parliamentary debate, where the spokesman of every political party tells the reasons for his voting for or against. Jordi Teixidor comments on every contribution on the debate and infers that the government of the Generalitat does not want any Law of Drama, but it prefers to rule by decree, and that is a characteristic of the right. A Law of Drama means to have fixed some middle or longterm aims, whereas till now the dramatic policy of the Conselleria has not even been defined and, in oder to control drama, it prefers to play the part of Maecenas.
...

Open Access

The article explores the dramatic work of Rogelio Orizondo (Santa Clara, 1983) and suggests a search focused on autofiction as a discursive device. By analysing the play Ayer dejé de matarme gracias a ti Heiner Müller (2010), it provides the generational connective perspective between the playwright’s poetics and his dramatist colleagues. To do so, this play is presented as a model through its structural development, as a reflection of an aesthetic project shared by the graduates of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). The article seeks to characterise the construction of the autofictional device in Rogelio Orizondo’s poetics, shed light on the intertextual relations between Heiner Müller and the Cuban playwright, and showcase the effect of a prosthetic memory in the generation of the Novísimos, of which the playwright forms part. With a structure based on Orizondo’s view of the theatre tradition and its autoreflection in the layers of his writing, he returns to Shakespeare’s Hamlet to commit to a recontextualisation focused on issues distanced from the original, this time of a socio-political nature in Cuba. The research shows how the play by the English dramatist works as a jack of all trades to describe the resistance of a generation of playwrights who assume the prosthesis of other temporalities and geographies to filter their own aesthetic, ethical and political questionings.
...

...

He would live in Barcelona and visit the districts occupied by marginal immigrants; then he would go over the districts of the autochthonous population. Madrid has not got such sharp contrats despite the great number of foreigners who live there (Negros, Chineses, etc.). Angel Carmona set up a small group of theatre called La Pipironda which at first was composed of non-Catalan people. Its first name was Teatro de Sala y Alcoba. Carmona would try to look for our roots and harmonize the fact of being native of Barcelona and Catalan with the Spanish traditionalism. We would refuse cosmopolitism as a compulsory model. I began to collaborate early with the Auto de la donosa tabernera. Politics would mixed up with the theatre and the police began to rush into the performances. I still wrote another play, La batalla del Verdún, on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of La Pipironda. On remembering those times, you are amazed to see that Carmona has vanished and the homage he deserves has never been rendered to him. The independent theatre has followed another way, that of the “internationalism”, which differs from the one we would support. Now we can see the results: the theatre is going through a bad period.
...

The playlet (lloa) is a minor genre, a sort of prologue to the main play. Its purpose is to prepare the audience and its aim is didactic. The lloa we publish here reached us in a mutilated state; it must have been about 800 lines long, which makes it quite a play considering the characteristics of the genre. Dialogue is a basic element and the actors address the audience after a musical overture. We know nothing about the work which followed. The lloa is a dispute around the central figure: Desire. The work was written in 1697 and is now in the Departamental Archive of Perpinyà.
...
