The Site-Specific Projects of Teatro Potlach: The City as Set Design and Dramaturgy
Article

Teatro Potlach is an Italian theatre company founded in 1976 by Pino Di Buduo and Daniela Regnoli in a little village, Fara In Sabina, after a period of training by the two young people at Odin Teatret, under the supervision of Eugenio Barba. The principles of the company are those of the theatre anthropology followed by Odin, the work exclusively based on the body and the transformation of the space through the body. In 1991, to create a relationship with the citizens of the place where the company lives, the director begins to perform the first site-specific performance, Invisible Cities, inspired by Italo Calvino’s book, which explores the memory of a place and gives it back to its inhabitants, letting a never seen before city appear. Subsequently he creates other similar projects like Contemporary Landscapes, inspired by the intangible culture of the places; Angels over the City, about the theme of the artist and I Landscape – The Secrets of the Building, which creates its dramaturgy based on a historical value building. The projects are developed with an interdisciplinary and multimedia approach that involves, in addition to the performing arts, anthropology, history and above all architecture and the work on a space. Indeed, on the place chosen for the performance, the company builds a path of about 1 kilometer that is transformed by means of different elements. Unlike theatre shows where the space is generally not binding, for these projects the space is the primary founding core. All the stage elements and the performances are linked to the real city, which is not a neutral element but an active subject. The final set design is partly built and partly real, but the built one depends on the real one that determines it. The city is not only set design but also dramaturgy because it is staged and tells itself. For this reason we can speak about “dramaturgy of space”, referring to dramaturgy, not only to the written text but also all the elements that create the whole performance. The final goal is to put citizens in contact with the culture and memory of the place where they live, which are the dramaturgical roots of these projects so that they are not forgotten and they are transmitted to the new generations.
...

...

Based on the example of the production Numax-Fagor-Plus by the Catalan director Roger Bernat, the article discusses the paradoxical structure of a technical device while establishing relations with aspects of a “monolithic” behaviour of social media spectators with users who tweet and post, and while raising issues concerning autonomous and free action. The technical transmission of the text is important for the development of the theatre production Numax-Fagor-Plus in the fragile framework of the museum, in principle outside theatre. This article mediated by a “technical device” matches the idea of postspectacular theatre — to introduce distances to enable the emergence of the “third mediator” — and works as spontaneous participation in the sense of postdramatic theatre. The seemingly direct contact in the “dialogue” in which the spectators might be willing to engage, prepared for the self-empowerment of the talks among the audience before the start of the scenic realization, becomes ironic proof of its illusion, visualised as a mere monitoring of a technically suggested behaviour. The scenic realization makes clear how those attending work as a mass, how they relate with each other and how they act with the text “on demand”, while subjecting themselves, from the outset, without challenging it, to a rule that is nowhere explicitly mentioned. Based on an apparent freedom, they are almost cynically led towards a test of obedience, and now they paradoxically experience a much wider and notable freedom: what happens if I don’t subject myself to it?
...

"Moving objects" Who moves whom? Who moves what?
Article
Open Access

Moving objects is a performative practice that I have been developing for four years in different contexts. Through a simple proposal (or action score), participants move objects that were already in a space. In silence, the landscape changes and the action of moving objects reverses its logic: who moves whom? The gesture ceases to be utilitarian and becomes the result of listening and deciding; it becomes the primary gesture of creation and, invoking Simone Weil’s concept, of decreation.

No mere body as an object, nor mere figuration of the object. Moving objects calls into question the relationships between objects and bodies, between figuration and abstraction, eroding these dichotomies, revealing relations of continuity, contagion, mimicry, absorption and chiasm between bodies and objects. In this intertwining and blurring of body and object positions, a performative critique of the categories of subject and object as well as the very structure of representation becomes apparent.

In this lecture I propose to reflect on certain events that have taken place in the unfolding of this practice (a practice that may find parallels with the spontaneous practices of social and political protest, as well as with playing, or certain rituals), which highlight transfigurative relationships between bodies and objects, potentials for transformation of the common space and its collective meaning and that allow critical ex-ploration of dialectics between what we look at and what looks at us, what we touch and what touches us, what we move and what moves us.
...

...

This is an interview with the self-taught dancer and choreographer Cesc Gelabert. While we accompany him through his choreographies he shows us the loneliness of a long distance runner, the discoveries during the long process of creation, the collaborations and encounters with other people.

It is a continuous voyage in the present and the past, from his first casual contact with the world of dance (1969) to the premiere of Alhambra (1983); from the moment when, for the first time, he found himself dancing alone in front of an empty auditorium until the moment when, also for the first time, he danced with another star, Lydia Azzopardi; from his search for reference points, looking around in a thousand and one courses in Catalonia and abroad which he paid for with money saved up during a whole year's word, until the time when he taught his discoveries at La Fábrica-Espai de Dansa. We go through the period of his «youth», of learning to walk, of collaborations with other performers, such as Frederic Amat, Lewis Richter, Rafael Subirachs: Acció-0, Acció-1 (Action-0, Action-1); of solitude, of running away to New York Mi viejo traje de pana (My Old Corduroy Suit), where he met Carles Santos (Cesc Gelabert & Dancers) and Perico Pastor; the return, two years later, to «motionless» Barcelona; loneliness again plata i Or (Silver and Gold); the chance meeting with Lydia Azzopardi, Danzas para interiores (Dances for Interiors); the reencounter with Carles Santos, Concert per a veu, piano i dansa (Concert for Voice, Piano and Dance); the beginning of an understanding (Alhambra, Five to Two).

The Risk of Investigating is basically a way of understanding life: investigating outside and inside oneself; it is a way of understanding dance: an archive of experiences, a reflection of life; it is an encounter with solitude.
...

Strindberg, l’artista

At fifteen minutes, The Stronger (1889) condenses some challenges in the theatrical production of Strindberg: stage time, non-verbal language or dialogue construction of the plot and characters through the battle of brains between Mrs X and Miss Y. Psychological introspection reveals the multifaceted and contradictory nature of the human being and invites the audience to construct the characters from their sub-jectivity, one of the most modern shifts in Strindberg's theatrical conception which links with the nostalgia that comes from the loss of the totalising depiction of reali-ty, typical of the spirit of the era in Europe and radical in Scandinavia.

Strindberg knew how to capture and interpret the pulses of his time and the need for new languages to reach the audience, his fellow citizens, and move them, open their eyes and encourage them to change things. This led him to constant experi-mentation, to always traverse the boundaries of all genres, arts and disciplines to the point of forcing the limits of understanding, as he did in Inferno, or in the plays for the Intima Teater.

The Stronger is a clear example of Strindberg's commitment to move freely through the unknown and obscure terrain of artistic creation, through the appeal of the abyss that the Artist feels if he gives himself unreservedly to his creative in-stinct, and how he defends his contemporaneity and challenges our contemporary playwrights.
...

...

Theatrical activity is waning in Catalonia because of the exigencies of commercial profit. There is an urgent need to set up a theatre of investigation and this requires a theatre law, decentralized theatre policies and publicly financed theatre space (municipal theatres, multi-use houses). This is why we have decided to combine our efforts and propose: a) that work and show space be provided; b) that such space not be altered because of deliberately commercial interests; c) that the theatre of investigation we demand dues not mean a theatre for the “élite”; d) we don't interpret investigation as a lot of isolated experiences; e) the interest, quality and rigor of our previous work guarantee the seriousness of our proposal; f) reference must be made to the player who is not able to accept coherent work cycles, by g) our proposal is open to everyone who believes that theatre is alive and evolving.
...

...

Interview between Feliu Formosa and the playwright Joan Oliver (Sabadell, 1899). Joan Oliver was born in the bosom of a traditional family of the bourgeoisie of Sabadell. Since youth he concentrated on Arts and he wrote poems, plays and prose. He wrote for severa! periodical publications. In 1928 he published his first book, Una tragedia a Lil·liput (A tragedy in Lil·liput). The following year he made his debut in the theatre with the presentation in «Mirador» of Gairebé un acte o Joan, Joana i Joanet (Almost an act or Joan, Joana and Joanet). But, till 1934, he doesn't begin his important poetic career —during it he uses the pseudonym of Pere Quart— with Les decapitacions (The Decapitations). His first important play was Cataclisme (Cataclysm) (1935). He wrote other plays such as: Allò que tal vegada s'esdevingué (That which perhaps occurred) and Cambrera Nova (New Waitress) (1937); La fam (The Hunger) (1938, Prize of the Teatre Català de la Comèdia); Ball robat (Dance Stolen) and Primera representació (First Performance) (performed for the first time in 1958 and 1959); La drecera (The Short Cut) (Àngel Guimerà Prize, 1957). He made very good translations, both from narrators (Colette, Elsa Morante, Simone de Beauvoir) and playwrights (Molière, Shaw, Claudel, Beckett, Cekhov, Goldoni, Labiche…). Joan Oliver tried to be iconoclast and several subjects that distinguished definitely his work are placed between humour and satire.
...

...

However, along with returning to him in theatre and explicitly referring to him in some of his films, Bergman drew on Strindberg to build his film dramas as an exploration of human pain, the unrest of love and sexual relations, the dead turned into ghosts that pursue the living, and the uncertain boundaries between reality and dreams, among other issues. This is how Strindberg’s mark on Bergman’s film production will be explored, with the idea that he not only created under the playwright’s influence but that, to some extent, he continued his work.
...

...
