At fifteen minutes, The Stronger (1889) condenses some challenges in the theatrical production of Strindberg: stage time, non-verbal language or dialogue construction of the plot and characters through the battle of brains between Mrs X and Miss Y. Psychological introspection reveals the multifaceted and contradictory nature of the human being and invites the audience to construct the characters from their sub-jectivity, one of the most modern shifts in Strindberg's theatrical conception which links with the nostalgia that comes from the loss of the totalising depiction of reali-ty, typical of the spirit of the era in Europe and radical in Scandinavia.

Strindberg knew how to capture and interpret the pulses of his time and the need for new languages to reach the audience, his fellow citizens, and move them, open their eyes and encourage them to change things. This led him to constant experi-mentation, to always traverse the boundaries of all genres, arts and disciplines to the point of forcing the limits of understanding, as he did in Inferno, or in the plays for the Intima Teater.

The Stronger is a clear example of Strindberg's commitment to move freely through the unknown and obscure terrain of artistic creation, through the appeal of the abyss that the Artist feels if he gives himself unreservedly to his creative in-stinct, and how he defends his contemporaneity and challenges our contemporary playwrights.
...

...

However, along with returning to him in theatre and explicitly referring to him in some of his films, Bergman drew on Strindberg to build his film dramas as an exploration of human pain, the unrest of love and sexual relations, the dead turned into ghosts that pursue the living, and the uncertain boundaries between reality and dreams, among other issues. This is how Strindberg’s mark on Bergman’s film production will be explored, with the idea that he not only created under the playwright’s influence but that, to some extent, he continued his work.
...

...

This paper explores the stages that structured Andreas, Jonathan Châtel’s rewriting of The Road to Damascus by August Strindberg. Based on the questioning of the uncertain identity of the character of the Stranger, the task of rewriting revolves around key themes: the dream of changing lives, the desire to disappear, the dizziness of madness. Andreas, a labyrinthine dream play in dialogue with the Strindberg path, has also been a meditation on the act of writing and the role of the maternal figure in creation.
...

In spring 2008, Santiago del Hoyo and Manuel Bonillo settled in Granada after having worked for three years with the company @lma @lter in Bulgaria. They brought together an unstructured and heterogeneous group of people with different backgrounds, contexts and profiles, and created a theatrical rarity that they introduced at the Universidad de Granada that same year. It was entitled Rapsodia n.º 2: “La vida es sueño” and was born of the intersection of a Brahms rhapsody, a pseudo-random selection of the text of Calderon's play, and an overactive philosophical obsession. The theatrical experiment was a success, and they received a small grant that they fully invested in renting premises of 40 m² in a deprived neighbourhood in Granada. In September 2009 they boldly opened the venue to the public, where they offer comprehensive courses in "stage creation" and free shows three times a week. Since then they have produced more than twenty shows, toured some of the most important international experimental theatre circuits, and continue with their stage rarities, which critics and audiences alike regard as unclassifiable. Coinciding with the beginning of spring 2019, the 2nd Research Conference on Independent Theatre was held at the Institut del Teatre. The specification ("independent") of the call first caused bewilderment, and then controversy. The Vladimir Tzekov case, which feels challenged by both, is presented here as a bid to discover, denounce, contradict and subvert its own conditions of possibility, which are the conditions of possibility of its (in)dependencies.
...

...

...

In this paper I elaborate on how matter is thought of in the work of Henri Bergson and Karen Barad, thus challenging the Cartesian split between body and mind.

On the one hand, I disclose Bergson’s envisagement of matter not as a thing but as a process, and stress how matter plays a central role in the experience of duration, therefore shaping reality as a process of becoming-with. Although Bergson’s diagrams are usually figured as static, I argue that they are actually imbued with movement and should be seen as moving. This bond of matter to duration and transformation blurs common distinctions between matter and language and proves especially useful when thinking of dance and performance as arts of mattering.

On the other hand, I follow Barad’s description of quantum mechanics in order to highlight that matter cannot be torn apart from meaning, since knowledge cannot be produced out of matter but is always constructed from within matter. Barad’s insistence on the production of knowledge as an embodied practice reveals a strong political commitment to the world as an ongoing open process of mattering that asks us to rethink the meaning of agency from a posthumanist point of view.

I argue that, for both Bergson and Barad, matter can be said to perform. I eventually raise the question of how such an approach can help us think about and practise dance and performance beyond the Cartesian framework of the primacy of language.
...

...

This project resulted in a work of artistic research and creation highlighting, from a theatre perspective, specific sectors and fields related to the world of tourism that had suffered marginalisation and job insecurity. It consisted of creating theatre productions leading to research on the contemporary theatre praxis itself, playing with invading dramaturgies in public spaces based on relational devices from participatory strategies that gave rise to collective action. The two devices had, on the one hand, a clear objective of social awareness-raising and, on the other, an experimental and innovative objective. This caused a reflection on performativity, theatricality and the components of the dramatic game, particularly the audience’s active function.

The devices presented managed to activate a transformative power of the social reality through the artistic event by inviting the audience to become actors participating in the performance: from the defence of the identity of a marginalised neighbourhood to the intervention in and subversion of the urban logic to fight against the impact of mass tourism in the cities, poetically returning to their charm.
...

...

In the contemporary European theatre context, the involvement of the spectator as an integral and decisive part of the scenic realisation is a widespread practice, capable of redefining the theories and praxes of theatre language. The material contribution of the spectator is an intrinsic part of the scenic writing, sometimes as co-creator with the actors or as the sole creator and protagonist on stage.

This article reflects on the concept and role of the apparatus in productions exclusively aimed at the pleasure of the spectators. The apparatus, understood following Michel Foucault, as a “set of strategies of the relations of forces supporting, and supported by, certain types of knowledge” (Agamben, 2009: 2), changes traditional playwriting: the apparatus provides for the introduction of the programming activity in theatre. Consequently, the apparatus is the dramaturgy of the scenic event, with the provision and organisation of the event in each phase, reconciling it with the action of the spectator. Using some technological devices (tablet, headphones, remote controls, etc.), the spectator follows the instructions and questions, thereby contributing to the scenic realisation. Depending on the forms of the apparatus, it changes how the spectator is included in the participatory dynamics programmed. In some cases, the form assumed by the dramaturgical concept is that of a complex design with the construction of a sensory, spatial poetics or of the imaginary or by re-writing reality; in others, it is the net, which originates an architecture of the experience lived by the spectator, the sole protagonist on stage.

Based on these reflections, we will explore different participatory paradigms in order to analyse how these provide for specific modes of relationship: between the spectator and the participatory performance; between the spectators; and between the spectator and him or herself. We will provide specific examples of each typology, which will enable us to establish a broad vision of the languages characteristic of participation and of the mutations that it involves in the theatrical linguistic codes.
...

...

Drawing on the creative process of the El candidato (o candidata), a piece based on a board game, I focus on the performativity inherent in games and how it can be transferred to the design of a performance device.

Through Eiermann and Fischer-Lichte, I explore the similarities between game and scenic realisation, and propose applying the concept of device to the understanding of theatrical development. Understanding a scenic realisation as a device enables us to analyse it as a set of power relations between participants, without any a priori distinction between actants and spectators. I emphasise the technological dimension of the apparatus as presented by Agamben, where the rules have the function of both restricting and enhancing the freedom of participants. This dynamic is paradigmatically exemplified in the dialectical tension between rules and uncertainty that we find in games.

In tracing the political implications, I explore a number of aspects that are characteristic of participatory artistic formats. I propose a distinction between a representative and a performative point of view, as well as between game and play, and I rely on the binomial formulated by Rancière between politics and police to analyse the power relations at stake in a performance, and detect whether their ludic components are used to create spaces of freedom or to deploy pre-programmed results. In addition to drawing on my practice, I comment on pieces by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Rimini Protokoll, LIGNA, Kate McIntosh, and Mónica Rikić to exemplify different degrees of audience agency.
...

...

From The Cross Border Project company, Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta, written and directed by Lucía Miranda, is an artwork created using verbatim theatre techniques. The dramatic text and staging are based on interviews with teachers, non-teaching staff, mothers and stu-dents of a secondary school. This work is part of a phenomenon that had a significant presence in Spanish plays during 2019-2020 season: the use of “the real” on stage. This article focuses on analysing Miranda’s work through this concept and its use as a theatri-cal strategy, given its influence on emotive reception, with a higher purpose: to reveal the structural discriminations and difficulties experienced in secondary education in Spain and promote citizen awareness. In our methodology we mix theories on contemporary political sociology around the real and documentary theatre, as well as theory about the analysis of the creative process and of productions.
...

...

The Covid-19 pandemic has generated a broad supply and demand of “responses” to and interpretations of the current situation. In the artistic field, lockdown has fostered extimacy and rewarded a series of more or less performative “community” and relational initiatives. Balconies, linked or recorded and shared through mobile phones in real time, have been redefined as spaces for participation in rituals and cultural practices of a collective nature. Specifically, in this article my aim is to reflect on performance and relational aesthetics in a lockdown and post-lockdown situation; that is, subject to logics such as social distancing or other protocols of sanitary and responsible behaviour. In this respect, I will emphasise the metamorphosis of performance, born under the sign of criticism of institutional frameworks, into one of the main channels of community production/expression.
...

...

Although at the start of the new century a generation of playwrights renewed the Catalan text-based repertoire, twenty years later many emerging companies tend to collectively write their shows instead of staging already existing plays. Theirs is often a hybrid, multidisciplinary writing, established during the research and creation process. This trend has also spread among schools, which welcome the performing arts and contemporary creation in their classrooms.

The objective of this study is to look at the contexts of collective or community ‘co-writing’ that prevail in emerging creation and to check if the text plays a major role or whether the lack of interest in texts that has emerged since 2000 is real.

The methodology has involved conducting questionnaires among youth companies (emerging or not), professionals working in the performing arts in secondary schools, and others who promote youth/emerging creation through residencies. They have been asked about collective creation, Catalan text-based playwriting or multidisciplinarity.

The results show that the need to work makes new graduates form a company and take on all the roles of creation; that the horizontality that defines these companies comes from a crisis of hierarchy but also a specific demand: the desire of the performer to be a creative subject rather than an object; that the incorporation of technology tools is due to the fact that the new creators are digital natives, and that ‘co-writing’ is the most efficient way to introduce secondary students to a process of creation.
...

The following article focuses on the dramaturgical process developed in contemporary circus by analysing the piece Je tirerais pour toi by the company Collectif Merkén, performed by the Chilean artist Pamela Pantoja. A theoretical and reflexive analysis is carried out on how the dramaturgical connection is shaped through its contextual and/or territorial limits with the Chilean circus scene.

The central hypothesis of the article argues the transition from a fragmented dramaturgy to an authored dramaturgy based on stage practice, which has rectified the dramaturgical discourse of circus with extended practices of an identity nature to hybrid practices influenced by the postdramatic, underpinned by the principles of the search for dramaturgical limits.

We believe that this hybridisation is reshaping the identity directly linked to an area of ideological and social creation to later converge in aesthetic and dramaturgical reflections that embrace the current state of contemporary circus.

Moreover, Pamela Pantoja develops her show based on the narrative of the Chilean dictatorship and circus, specifically in aerial silk and hair hanging. The piece emerged out of the need to dialogue with her past and seeks to question the “pact of silence” that has hung over Chile since 11 September 1973. She does so through research and archives based on concepts and questionings of the family, the Chilean identity and the legacy of the coup in Chile: censorship and the apology for violence.
...
